Un and una mean a or an

Choose the article by gender and number.
Un and una introduce one person or thing. Unos and unas introduce some or a few people or things. The article has to agree with the noun phrase.

The small word before the noun carries the signal.
Lesson 3 made singular and plural automatic. Lesson 4 adds a new article set: un, una, unos, and unas. Use them as one phrase with the noun, just like el, la, los, and las.
Unos and unas mean some or a few
Use unos with masculine plural nouns and unas with feminine plural nouns. They are useful when the exact number is not important.

The article agrees with gender and number
The indefinite article must match the noun: masculine or feminine, singular or plural. Do not mix una with masculine nouns or unos with feminine nouns.

Feminine nouns with stressed a use un
Some feminine nouns that start with a stressed a sound use un in the singular to make pronunciation smoother. The plural returns to unas.
un aula -> unas aulasun hacha -> unas hachas
Some nouns already look plural
Words like gafas, tijeras, and vaqueros are normally used in plural form, so they naturally take unas or unos.

Paraguas keeps the same noun form
Paraguas is masculine and can look the same in singular and plural. The article shows the number.
un paraguasunos paraguas
Hay un reloj en la entrada.
There is a clock at the entrance.
Un marks one masculine noun: un reloj.
Necesito una entrada, por favor.
I need a ticket, please.
Una marks one feminine noun: una entrada.
En el aula hay unas sillas y unos libros.
In the classroom there are some chairs and some books.
Unas is feminine plural; unos is masculine plural.
La profesora tiene un hacha pequeña en la foto.
The teacher has a small axe in the photo.
Hacha is feminine, but singular uses un: un hacha.
Un cantante y una cantante hablan con unos alumnos.
A male singer and a female singer speak with some students.
Cantante can be masculine or feminine; the article shows it.
Tengo unas gafas, unas tijeras y unos vaqueros.
I have glasses, scissors, and jeans.
These nouns are normally used in plural form.
